Thoughts about why I volunteer. It’s a special feeling.
By Jodie Cook:
This #Volunteers Week 2026 I reflected on how my parents and those around me growing up influenced my drive to volunteer. Every week my mum and dad, sometimes separately and often together visited elderly people, helped them with tasks and shopping and undertook befriending well before the word was even used. This despite the many pressures of daily life. I am forever grateful for their showing me the way, and in their informal volunteering style they have given hours of help to others.
I cannot imagine a world where I don’t volunteer. I have made many new connections, work with an amazing set of people and have learnt so much about myself. Being a Trustee of a small charity is incredibly rewarding. The purpose, mission, vision and values are all the motivation that I need and suicide prevention is a cause that is personal to me.
Thank you to everyone who volunteers as a Trustee or Volunteer at The Will Garvey Trust Foundation.
