Our interns are seconded to the Will Garvey Trust Foundation through their University’s internship programmes. They provide their focused time, skills, energy and enthusiasm on a range of assignments with us. Currently we have strong and flourishing working relationships with both the Derby University ‘Driven’ programme and the Nottingham Trent University ‘Future You’ programme. In a competitive field, with a surprising number of candidates, the undergraduate and postgraduate students below all impressed us at their interviews and were invited to take on a role with us. I am a family friend, recently retired, who wants to help and support the family and charity in whatever ways I can to make our communities suicide safe and enable young people to choose another path.
Currently, I am the creator and manager of the website, a contributor to the committees and actions of the charity and part-time raffle prize collector.

I run my own Financial Planning business in Derby. Originally from Nottingham, I have lived in the Ilkeston area for almost 20 years now, with my wife and I have two grown up children.

I am Will’s Dad. There isn’t a day goes by when I don’t reflect on what happened to our wonderful son. I really would not want another family to experience the same devastation we have. This is the driving force for setting up our charity.
I am currently a science teacher and witness how young people struggle in their lives on a daily basis. Being in such a privileged position gives me an insight into how signposting about available support and informing them about how self care can dramatically improve young people’s lives.
Through WTF I want to extend this ethos into our local communities: to make them suicide safe.

I am Will’s mum. I’ve been a teacher for donkey’s years, and I love it, but the best job I’ve ever had is being Will, and his sister’s, mum. I helped set this charity up because I couldn’t sit by and let another family experience the nightmare of losing a child to suicide. I’ve learned so much since Will died, too late to make a difference to him, but not to others. I share Will’s love of Nottingham Forest, I’m still a season ticket holder, and I’m enjoying working with Nottingham Forest Community Trust on their mental health campaign, ‘It’s Tricky to Talk’.

Working for over 30 years as a Nurse with the NHS in Emergency Medicine and Children and Young People’s Community Health, I have seen a mounting crisis among young peoples emotional well being and the limited provision of support for young people and their families who are struggling to cope with mental health issues.
I have known Will and his family for many years and wanted to use my professional experience to help other young people to find the support they need during times when they feel overwhelmed and unable to cope.

I’m Becky Murdoch and I’m the current chair of the WTF charity. I am also Will’s aunty. At his funeral, I made a promise that I would do all I could to help other people deal with the fallout of experiencing bereavement by suicide but also to do anything I could to support people and the families of those who face challenges due to their Mental health. I was a deputy head teacher tasked with supporting students, their families and staff with a variety of wellbeing issues. I believe that the earlier people are able to gain support for mental health issues, the more likely the impact on themselves, their families and friends, will be lessened. I believe that the work of WTF can help to signpost and support this.

I worked with Jo when we met at the West Hallam Playgroup where our children went and we became part of the Committee. I also spent time as a Trustee on the Village Hall committee. I then went back to work and lost contact. When I found out about Will it was hard hitting and recently regained connection with Jo, it was only right that I try and help as a Trustee and act as secretary. I am a mental health champion in the workplace and I would like to support the charity with its plans. I am keen on how we make the system work for people who need help and support. Prevention is something that i feel is important and the Will Garvey Trust Foundation will play a crucial role in this area.
I currently work as a membership officer and have been involved in governance all of my working career. I sit on committees and Boards and have gained a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge.

Hi I’m Joanne, good friends with Joanna and Kev. We have spent weeks holidays at the seaside with them as a family. I have seen first hand the impact that losing a child can have on parents, immediate family, relatives and friends. Being part of the WTF enables us to raise awareness so other families may avoid the nightmare of losing a loved one to suicide.

I have worked in the NHS for over 30 years as a nurse, therapist and trainer supporting young people and families with mental health issues. I think it is important not only to raise awareness about mental health issues but to help people translate this into action in our local community.
Having known Will and his family over many years I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Will Garvey Trust Foundation.

I am a nurse by background, and have spent a number of years in board level posts in Nottingham, Derby and Staffordshire, where I was the Turnround Chairman appointed following the damming report into care standards at Stafford Hospital in 2009.
I have been fortunate to have held a number of ministerial appointments where I have been able to influence national nursing and healthcare policy, and I am keen to use this experience and these networks to support the trustees in their amazing work for WTF

I have held posts at Board level both in Executive and Non-Executive roles and continued to be actively involved in a number of volunteer roles across the public sector. My professional and personal networks enable me to explore and influence at a local level and regional level.

I have worked in mental health for many years and have been too close to too many crises and tragedies that far too often result from poor mental health to pass up an opportunity to support this charity in its aims.
Having known Will and his family for a number of years, I am keen to support WTF as it contributes positively to help the local community develop good mental health. I aim to use my experience and knowledge in whatever ways I can and am starting by developing a pilot project that enables WTF to accomplish their plans over the next weeks, months and years more effectively.

Hello! I’m Lucy and I am an experienced Market Research Manager with a growing passion for helping and supporting charities.
Although I don’t know Jo and Kev personally, this is a cause that is very close to my heart having lost a friend the same way they lost Will. I have seen the impact that it can have on friends and families, so I am proud to be able to use my acquired business skills to help WTF to enable young people to choose a different path and create communities that are suicide safe.

Hi! I’m Leonor and I am originally from Portugal. On my free time I enjoy listening to live music, watching stand-up comedy and travelling.
I have graduated in Psychology with Criminology from Nottingham Trent University.
Throughout my degree I became very passionate and interested in pursuing a career in psychological research. Communities’ mental well-being and suicide prevention are very important topics to me on a personal and professional level. As such, when I had the opportunity to work with WTF, through a partnership with NTU, I was extremely pleased to see the work they do and I could not pass the opportunity of conducting a research piece tailored to WTF. I feel very honored to have worked and get to know the people involved in WTF, learning more about the cause and contributing to their work within the community as speaking out is the most important step!

I’m WTF’s animator and designer. I love what I do and I’ve worked with some very exciting clients – including the BBC, BRIT Awards, LEGO, and am responsible for the visual identity of the charity and of WILLFEST.
I met Will at swimming club when we were kids and we became good friends for a number of years. When we lost WIll, I was devastated and knew I’d want to help his family in any way I could. Once WTF was formed, I wanted to help make the amazing foundation look like something he’d be proud of.
I also perform comedy at WILLFEST with sets that have received reviews such as “better than staring at the grass”.

As a family friend and someone who’s been involved with mental health professionally and academically, I simply couldn’t turn down the chance to help WTF in any way I could.
I work as a social researcher investigating, amongst many other issues, mental health. Research is really important for understanding how mental health impacts everyone, especially young people, and I’m helping WTF build on this.
My work has taught me that reaching out for help is really difficult, and we need to be less afraid of talking to each other. Talking really does fix, and that’s what WTF is all about.

Hi! I’m Beth and I’m a second year Film and Television Studies student at the University of Nottingham.
Growing up with social media and having experienced mental health issues myself, suicide prevention is very close to my heart. I’m excited to be able to lend my knowledge of social media to WTF and to encourage people to be more open about their mental health. The more people we can reach the better!
