Partnering with local universities (Nottingham Trent and Derby)
Initiative purpose:
This initiative is providing WTF with access to research, consulting and operational resources to support us in carrying out our goals more effectively.
Supported goals:
Work with local organisations and groups to improve attitudes towards mental health and to implement early intervention programs
Improve access to information and resources to support mental fitness
Be a visible, proactive, and positive presence in our communities
What are we doing:
We have partnered with two Universities in different ways:
1. Nottingham Trent University: We have partnered with Nottingham Trent University Graduate Internship Scheme And Future You Programme.
2. Derby University: We have partnered with Derby University to provide short term work opportunities to support their Driven Programme.

We have partnered with Nottingham Trent University on two schemes/programmes.
Graduate Internship Scheme: Our initial piece of research/consultancy was accepted by the NTU Graduate Internship Scheme.
We were delighted that Leonor Goncalves, a Portuguese graduate of Psychology and Criminology at the University, undertook our first piece of work.
Leo worked with us for 6 weeks. Her role was to carry out a literature review across mental health and suicide. The aim was to look at current data and what it shows us about changes in attitudes and behaviour, and the barriers to accessing help, for different age groups.
Leo, with a passion for research and mental health, joined the WTF team in March 2020 at a tense time with lockdowns the norm. Thankfully, much of the literature review and secondary research was carried out prior to the lockdown, and Leo was able to complete her research from home.
The parameters of the research were limited to three main areas that WTF had identified as key to developing the long term strategy for the projects we are planning to provide in the local area:
- the barriers that prevent young people accessing support for mental health and wellbeing
- factors impacting on the wellbeing of university students
- the cultural context of mental health and suicide
Leo presented her findings to the Trustees in June, 2020.

Future You Programme: This scheme was for undergraduates.
Two undergraduates (Donna and Eleanor) gave their time and energies to us undertaking Research and Graphics Design roles. Both contributed successfully to WTF and we are grateful to have had their input to our charity.
Through their Driven Programme, Derby University provided three undergraduate students as Interns to WTF.
The interns (Izzy, Molly and Rose) performed Mechandising and Branding, Events co-ordination and Bid Writer roles for the charity.
All contributed successfully and we are grateful for their time, energy and outputs for our charity.
LATEST: Great news! Tunde Abdul-Azeez has joined us for an internship over the Summer. Tunde will focus on helping analyse our website performance, setup and navigation, and make recommendations to improve it to enhance the user’s experience as well as setup a more effective use of Google Analytics.
We are currently working with Derby University to find Interns to fulfil roles with WTF for the remainder of the 2023/2024 academic year.
