45 Club

45 Club – Walks and Runs

Initiative purpose:

The club was created as a subdivision of WTF to encourage togetherness and exercise amongst people. We wanted to create a safe space for people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. The club is open to all levels of ability, from beginners to regular runners/walkers.

Supported goals:

Improve access to information and resources to support mental fitness

Be a visible, proactive, and positive presence in our communities

What are we doing:

Why 45?

Whilst Will was at University he became part of the Leeds Gryphons American Football team and wore the number 45.

What is the 45 Club?
An opportunity for likeminded individuals to come together to enjoy physical activity and nature – two factors proven to improve mental wellbeing. There is no pressure to, however, it is also an opportunity to speak to others about anything that is on your mind. You might also find that this becomes a safe space for you to share how you’re feeling, though please be aware 45 Club doesn’t offer a professional counselling service.

How often does the 45 Club meet?
Twice a month for one 3k walk and one 5k run. Keep an eye on our socials for any updates.

Where does the 45 Club meet?
All outings are reasonably local. So far the club has been meeting at either Bennerley Viaduct in Ilkeston or Shipley Country Park in Heanor. Both are accessible by public transport and both have nearby parking. The club plans to organise an annual hike which will be a little further afield.

Why should you join the 45 Club?
The club is an opportunity to meet and converse with new people, whilst building physical and mental resilience. Being outside, in nature and breathing in fresh air has so many health benefits. The club may be your pathway to becoming more open about your own feelings, and also about listening to others. The physical challenges of the club may act as a metaphor for your mental challenges, as you persevere and overcome barriers present in both states.
We continue aiming to spread awareness of mental health struggles and how to understand them more. Physical and mental health go hand in hand, and must be treated as equally important! Our next events are in the diary picture (below). We hope to see you there😊
